South Downs National Park

The South Downs National Park covers an area of 1,600 km2 offering a landscape as diverse as it is breathtaking. Green rolling pastures, ancient woodlands and river valleys truly encompass the National Park’s ethos of being one of ‘Britain’s Breathing Spaces’. There is so much to do and see in this area, from walking, cycling or horse riding across the Downs, exploring wildlife in the wetlands, visiting the many heritage sites to experiencing opera at the world famous Glyndebourne.

The Adur Outdoor Activities Centre (AOAC) offers a wide range of activities, opportunities and experiences for visitors to Shoreham. With their 10 metre high indoor climbing wall and bouldering room, through to kayaking, sailing, canoeing on the Adur River to mountain biking across the South Downs the centre has something to offer all ages and abilities!

Discover the South Downs on foot. From the iconic South Downs Way National Trail to a gentle Sunday afternoon stroll, more than 3,000 kilometres of footpaths lie waiting for you to explore. Spot wildlife, escape the pressures of modern life and drink in the glorious landscapes of the South Downs. Enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of high chalk downland, patchworks of fields and deep wooded valleys. Along the way discover Iron Age hill-forts, ancient chalk figures and medieval villages.

Shoreham Beach is famed for its kitesurfing community, if you feel braver than just watching you can book a short course with one of the providers on the Shoreham Kitesurf Club website, just click on the photo to follow the link.

Cycling

Escape to the hills or relax on the flat on 1,200 kilometres of public bridleways. From the challenge of the 160km South Downs Way – the only UK National Trail fully accessible to riders – to hitting the mountain bike trails at Queen Elizabeth Country Park, or a gentle road ride between pubs on one of our food trails, the South Downs is the perfect place to explore by bike. Most cyclists in the National Park have great manners and always show consideration for other people.

Horseriding

Horseriding

The South Downs is fantastic riding country. The chalk downland provides good going even after rain, and with miles of bridleways and byways, you can ride off-road for hours in some of the most beautiful countryside in England. Happy Valley Riding School is one of the many in the area. Just off the A27 in Shoreham by Sea. There are buses regularly from Shoreham the number 2 bus runs direct to the Holmbush Centre and then it is approximately 15 minutes walk.

The water has played an important part to this region for centuries. Fishermen have hauled their catch up onto Sussex beaches since before 1700 and even today you can still buy fresh fish on the beach. Fisherman now also enjoy casting their lines from Shoreham Beach, Brighton Marina and the pier in Worthing.
